Matt's Big Breakfast, but that big breakfast is served until 2:30 p.m.
That means I can get my afternoon off to a great start with primo-quality flapjacks, waffles and free-range eggs, along with terrific sides of thick-cut bacon, juicy country sausages and a smoky slab of ham.

The righteous, rib-sticking fare at Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles can make anybody feel soulful. I don't know why I even bother looking at the menu: I know I want the combo plate with Southern fried chicken, waffles, scrambled eggs and grits in a puddle of butter. Should I get the wicked red velvet cake, too? Why not? It's my fantasy.
Details: 10 W. Yuma St., Phoenix, (602) 340-1304.

It doesn't matter that Chris Bianco is a James Beard Award winner. It doesn't matter that a book has proclaimed the pizza at Pizzeria Bianco the country's best. I just know that I get incredibly happy in the presence of the Wiseguy pizza, made with smoked mozzarella, fennel sausage and roasted onions.

If I didn't have this job, Cyclo would be where I'd eat a couple of nights a week. These dynamic Vietnamese dishes never get old. I'm talking about grilled spicy beef salad; tamarind-glazed pork ribs; the crispy rice flour crepe; fragrant, meal-in-a-bowl pho; lemongrass chicken; and stir-fried bok choy and oyster mushrooms in fish sauce.

I feel sorry for people in other parts of the country who don't know about Indian fry bread, especially the way it's made at Fry Bread House: made-from-scratch and hand-stretched, just like Cecilia Miller learned to do it growing up on the Tohono O'odham reservation. Should I top it with red chile beef or butter and chocolate? One of each.
Details: 4140 N. Seventh Ave., Phoenix. (602) 351-2345.
