feb/march dining

it was an unprecedented month of dining for us. of course we have heather's birthday, valentine's day & my birthday within the space of a month.

  • chaparral room - mom took us for a great dinner. as always the service is the highlight. they are just incredible there. also have frank sinatra jr. there crooning which my mom loves.
  • a different point of view - went here for heather's birthday with marina. the view was awesome. the food was good. our waiter was psycho though. i think he was afraid of marina. he was all hyped up (heh, heh, heh) with his nervous laugh like he'd taken too many hydroxycut. he also had weak recommendations. he thought the dish with savory ice creams was weird - which we liked best. the lobster bisque was awesome here.
  • roy's - jen & stu took us - very good as always. had some stellar appetizers. the fish was great. great night.
  • t cooks - heather & i went for valentine's day as we had a gift certificate - this was actually a great meal. we had an awesome server (carrie) who led us down the right track. we had dual foie gras appetizers with a pate appetizer; lobster bisque i think - need to find my list.
  • sea saw - jen & stu took us for bday's. drop you in your tracks awesome as always. the meal was absolutely phenomenal. it's just too dang expensive. were going to go there for my birthday too but just couldn't justify the expense. i wouldn't even say that it's not a good value. i think nobu-san's food is that good. i think he is right up there with some of the best chefs in the country / world. we just don't make enough money to be able to afford going full bore. i guess we could do standard omakase but i think nobu-san expects more of us.
  • binkley's - holy mackeral. heather & i went to binkley's for my birthday instead & it was incredible. was expecting a great meal but got a completely unexpected absolutely phenomenal one. one of the best meals of my life. i love binkley's.
  • noodles ranch - here for the birthday with the family. had a great time. food was good as always. owner was super cool & the service was great. the family liked it too! liked the food & also the decor/charm that is completely unexpected in what looks like a strip mall fast food restaurant.
  • melting pot - actually had a terrible meal here. brought jenny & austin here & were embarrased by the service. i love the melting pot & heather & i had more great date nights there than anywhere else. we also always buy gift certificates for it because it is so fun. our server was horrifying. he must have been high or something. he kept vanishing for 20 - 30 minutes at a time. it took us 4 hours to get through dinner (tough with marina). the other major bummer was that our oil burner (we had 2 to diversify) was turned up to nuke the world heat and it burned everything for the first 1/3 of the main course. then they turned it off & it was cold 2/3 of the way through. also had other random stuff like clearing 1/2 the plates & then leaving the rest for 20-30 minutes. waited for our wine for about 20 minutes. had to flag down another waiter to get a plate for marina & water. had to flag down antoher waiter to get another plate for marina later & a spoon. also forgot the butter for the lobster. also forgot to sub tuna (since heather is pregnant) for chicken or sirloin as we'd requested. when i pointed it out, he subbed it for shrimp (no good as we needed food for marina) and had to go back again. the very cool thing was that when i informed the gm about our experience & our disappointment, she ended up comping our meal & buying a round of drinks. ensured me there had been no change in ownership or management so we'll definitely be going back again. we'll just run if we see that waiter again. he brought back memories of the waiters going our back & smoking when we were young & working at the door.
