lgo revisited again

mummy wanted to do lgo again. as i was going out of town, it was a bit of an excuse and i never need much of one to go somewhere good to eat.

we did the croque madame again. man that rocks. i also did the spanish latte again. man that rocks. i'm a condensed milke freak so i just loooove the taste of it. mummy got the commuter sandwich which while it was good, was way too boring compared to the croque madame. she also got a couple orders of the homemade english muffins which rock - and the homemade jam double rocks too. marina got a huge bowl of fresh fruit (with the creme fraiche on the side). she also got a kick ass chocolate soy milk. was just tasty... mummy had a honey latte which was also very good. oh i forgot to mention that i loooove their sea salt.

after that marina conned us into gelatoing at archelitto's. super yum as always. marina got lemon gelato that was great. i got valentino which was pommegranite, something something of rose petals and lavendar. it was awesome. super tasty, light, just plain yum. then to get us over the $10 debit card minimum (which we didn't actually make), heather got a coconut gelato. it was awesome but super rich. as we were already stuffed at that time, it just didn't go down as well as the valentino.

oh and we got 4 tammy coe coconut cupcakes.

fry bread house - lux

went to fry bread house after saturday my gym. got to take heather, stu, jenny, marina, sydney & cameron. they were having a street fair so it was a bit of an ordeal to get parked & there.

once we got there, we ordered the hominy beef stew special (me), green chile taco x2 (heather & jen), the green chile special (stu), a beef taco (syd & marina) and 3 honey powdered sugar fry breads.

of course the highlights were the fry bread, especially the desert ones. i really love that hominy beef stew too and the fry bread dipped in it goes great. i think jen & heather were a bit let down by their green chile tacos because of the rito factor. basically i don't think you should get green chile anywhere else if you've eaten the rito green chile. it's not fair to the other place. everybody liked it though.

after fry bread house, we traversed over to lux and pane bianco. took a look in pane bianco & everybody thought it was cool. we were all so full that we couldn't do another sandwich. as the market sandwich for that day was a lamb one, people waffled & i was going to go in & get one but they'd run out of lamb & switched to pork.

did the lux thing though. i had a velvet (their name for white mocha) that was great. jen and heather had soy decaf lattes. stu had an espresso and whipped cream. don't remember what that was called. we also all shared a very yummy vanilla cupcake and a piece of chocolate cake.

got the thumbs up from jen & stu too. jen said it was the best coffee she's had in years.

got a special thumbs up from sydney. she tried heather's and stu's and didn't like them. she tried mine & said it's good! better than heather's! better than daddy's! she proceeded to use her spoon and spoon mouthful after mouthful. eventually she tired of that & picked up the cup & drained it. it was hilarious. she probably drank 1/3 of my velvet! :)

mexican food

A brief trip to Guadalupe - the Mexican/Yaqui neighborhood at Guadalupe Rd. and Avenida del Yaqui - aka Priest Rd. - where you will find San Diego Bay restaurant (very simple, very good) and the Guadalupe Farmers' Market, with organic produce AND an array of house-labeled salsas and jams (try the Five Amigos Fire Roasted Pepper Salsa and the Peach Jalapeno jam). You'll also find a couple of markets for Mexican tiles and pottery in Guadalupe.

Mexican food" is exceptionally varied because the various regions of Mexico produce different styles. Most Mexican food in Phoenix is going to be "Sonoran" style which usually means "mild comfort food." You can spice it up with jalapeños and similar, but it tends to be hearty with plenty of cheese and tortillas and fairly inexpensive.
If that is what you are looking for, I would suggest Pepe's Taco Villa on West Camelback, Rosita's Place on East McDowell, El Napolito on North 24th Street, Carolina's on East Mohave, or El Bravo on North 7th Street (especially their green corn tamales).
For a step up in price and atmosphere, I would definitely head over to Tradiciones at 16th Street and Roosevelt or Asi Es La Vida on North 24th Street.
High end would definitely be Barrio Cafe on 16th Street, just south of Thomas, but be advised that they do not take reservations and the wait could be substantial. (I will note here that my two visits here were very different. The first time, I thought it was great, while my last visit this past Thursday was very mixed and I was disappointed.)
If you want New Mexican, Richardson's is the place (16th Street and Bethany). There is also the "standard bearer" Los Dos Molinos (South Phoenix), but I was less than impressed on my last visit there because it seemed like they had turned down the heat in the dishes.
One of the things that often gets overlooked, though, is the incredible seafood creations that can be found in Mexican cooking. I think a place that does this very well is Mariscos Playa Hermosa at 16th Street and Garfield.
Also, don't forget our western suburbs. If you are up for a drive to Glendale, I highly recommend Pedro's and La Perla (both on Glendale Avenue), which serve classic Sonoran fare.
And, of course, you can't go wrong with a visit to the food court at Phoenix Ranch Market (16th Street and Roosevelt). Grab some street tacos, a torta, a horchata from the beverage station and save room for one of the pastries sitting in the case as you exit the market.

rito's

i know heatherlee loves green chile. nothing special to me. i just went to a hole in the wall in phx called rito's. i had a green chile burro and two tacos. the tacos were great - put them up against anywhere but it was the green chile burro that kicked rear heiny. i don't even order green chile! and good tacos are just good tacos, nothing transcendental about a good taco.

the green chile burro. nice tortilla. soupy green chile filling with chunks of nice beef. just really great flavor/taste for $4.50.

unfortunately, i treated it like a taco bell burrito (not realizing how much sauce & such was in there) & it blew out the bottom & i covered my shirt & jeans with much of it (way too much of it as i wanted to eat it all). i look very cool right now.
it's on 14th and roosevelt (actually on 14th just south of roosevelt) in a residential neighborhood.

kind of reminds me of the carolina's scenario but with a far more limited menu. yummy, yummy green chile though.

bummer is only open m-f (9 - 5).

it was a mad-house though at around 11:30. huge line. didn't take that long to get through though. definitely will be going back.

..

update: stopped by rito's on the way home & barely squeezed in before they locked the door. got 2 green chile burros & a side of beans. heatherlee loved the green chile burro (we split it) and we both loved the beans. jcarnie, stuie & pp really liked the other one too! green chile from rito's!

pane bianco

ate at pane bianco today.

this is what it
http://www.pizzeriabianco.com/pane/contact.html

simple, clean flavors. nothing crazy fancy but very, very good.

i had the market sandwich - pretty much the daily sandwich special. it was made with:

bresaola, piave cheese and arugula

their mozzarella, tomato & basil is supposed to be excellent.

since i didn't know bresaola or piave cheese, here you go.

bresaola:
bresaola is air-dried salted beef eye of round that has been aged about 2-3 months until it becomes hard and a dark red, almost purple colour. it originated in the valtellina valley in northern italy's lombardy region, with pieces of beef being strung up to cure in the cool alpine air. it is lean, has a sweet, musty smell and is tender. its rich taste stems from a strict trimming process, where legs of beef are thoroughly defatted and seasoned with a dry rub of coarse salt and spices. It is then left to dry for a few days. afterwards a curing period follows, which lasts between one and three months depending on the particular bresaola's weight. Up to 40% of the meat's original weight is lost during aging.

as an antipasto bresaola is usually served at room temperature or slightly chilled, is sliced paper thin, and is drizzled with olive oil, lemon juice, rocket salad (also known as rucola), a smattering of cracked black pepper and freshly shaved parmesan cheese. this recipe is often referred to as carpaccio, because of its similarities with this dish. however, the most common way to eat it is simply freshly cut.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bresaola; http://italianfood.about.com/od/curedmeats/r/blr0801.htm http://www.babbonyc.com/in-bresaola.html http://www.buonitalia.com/index.cfm/act/Catalog.cfm/catalogid/235/description/Bresaola/browse/null/MenuGroup/Home/desc/Bresaola.htm

piave cheese - kind of tasted like parmigiano reggiano:
piave is a cow's milk cheese made only in the the piave river valley region of bellunao, italy. shaped as a wheel, it is made from pasteurized milk collected in two milkings, one of which is skimmed.

piave has a dense texture without holes that is straw-yellow in hue. the taste is often compared to that of montasio cheese -- which is to say, it imparts an intense, full-bodied flavor. piave is sold in the united states as a hard cheese (called piave vecchio or stravecchio, meaning "old" or "extra-old") at which point its taste resembles that of a young parmigiano reggiano.

fry bread house

ate at the fry bread house yesterday. holy hell it was good.

had the special with a fry bread & a bowl of hominy beef stew. so good that i couldn't wait & am still feeling the effects of burning the he double "l" out of my tongue. really tasty. crispy, doughy...just plain yummy.

then got a desert one with honey & powdered sugar. had to get back to class so tried to eat that while driving back - bad idea - honey & powdered sugar everywhere. honey all over my jeans, all over my car. powdered sugar all over my shirt. put it on hold until i got back to interface. was a complete mess when i got out of the car.

i was already late (i thought but no) but i stood outside the building stuffing my face as i couldn't put it down! honey & powdered sugar all over the face.

definitely a fan!

chowhound:

  • lux - winedubar; went here - it's awesome. best coffee we've had in az bar none. went back & bought decaf beans. awesome, awesome, awesome. think it has a rep for being snooty/attitudinal. for us it was 180 degrees the opposite. the barrista, sammy, was as cool as could be. talked to us a good deal. helped us with a drink for marina. even gave us a free back of beans. have been back since & he rememebered everybody even though it was just me. awesome.

Matt's Big Breakfast, but that big breakfast is served until 2:30 p.m.
That means I can get my afternoon off to a great start with primo-quality flapjacks, waffles and free-range eggs, along with terrific sides of thick-cut bacon, juicy country sausages and a smoky slab of ham.

The righteous, rib-sticking fare at Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles can make anybody feel soulful. I don't know why I even bother looking at the menu: I know I want the combo plate with Southern fried chicken, waffles, scrambled eggs and grits in a puddle of butter. Should I get the wicked red velvet cake, too? Why not? It's my fantasy.
Details: 10 W. Yuma St., Phoenix, (602) 340-1304.

It doesn't matter that Chris Bianco is a James Beard Award winner. It doesn't matter that a book has proclaimed the pizza at Pizzeria Bianco the country's best. I just know that I get incredibly happy in the presence of the Wiseguy pizza, made with smoked mozzarella, fennel sausage and roasted onions.

If I didn't have this job, Cyclo would be where I'd eat a couple of nights a week. These dynamic Vietnamese dishes never get old. I'm talking about grilled spicy beef salad; tamarind-glazed pork ribs; the crispy rice flour crepe; fragrant, meal-in-a-bowl pho; lemongrass chicken; and stir-fried bok choy and oyster mushrooms in fish sauce.

I feel sorry for people in other parts of the country who don't know about Indian fry bread, especially the way it's made at Fry Bread House: made-from-scratch and hand-stretched, just like Cecilia Miller learned to do it growing up on the Tohono O'odham reservation. Should I top it with red chile beef or butter and chocolate? One of each.
Details: 4140 N. Seventh Ave., Phoenix. (602) 351-2345.

I think it's Homaro Cantu of Moto, mentioned down below. If you go to his website, click enter a couple times, and then keep clicking on the headings ("Five Course" will do) you will eventually come across some pictures of his menu.
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/105/open_food-cantu.html

Cantu stretches the imagination and takes you on a dining adventure from the very first bite - which may even be your menu. Homaro prints the evening's offerings on edible paper using organic-based inks, all his own concoctions, which are conveniently compatible with his Canon Pixma ip3000 printer. These functional and delicious menus assume many final forms on the plate including risotto and alphabet soup.

Sometimes he seasons the menus to taste like the main courses. Recently, he used dehydrated squash and sour cream powders to match a soup entree. He also prepares edible photographs flavored to fit a theme: an image of a cow, for example, might taste like filet mignon.

carolina's - phx ranch market - lux coffeebar

carolina's
today we were able to hit a few spots (with my memory being jogged & learning new spots from my recent excellent find - the chowhound southwest board http://www.chowhound.com/boards/6/ )

we hit carolina's on 12th & mohave which i hadn't been to in 7+ years. was wonderful. the tortillas are truly amazing. huge & light & thin...amazing.

we ordered the chorizo combo plate, the green chile combo plate, the 2 machaca taco combo plate, a machaca taco withough cheese (for my dairy allergic daughter), 2 fountain drinks (horchata though we sampled the pina & the orange bang), a red beef tamale and a bag of chips for around $23.

the food was great. the tortillas were the highlight. having brought some home they are still great but they were divine there. the hot sauce was very tasty. the chorizo was great - would have loved to have had eggs with it but had to go burrito for that & wanted the rice & beans. rice & beans were also great. heather's green chile was very tasty. really happy with everything.

phoenix ranch market
after that, we stopped by phoenix ranch market on 16th & roosevelt. it was very cool. it reminded us of a mexican take on ranch 99. big supermarket totally boned out ethnic style. some very cool stuff. my favorite part was the outside edges. going counter clockwise, started with very good looking meat including some interesting stuff: multiple tripe bins, huge tongues, a whole cow's head, chorizo of course. then the seafood section. also looked good. had a ceviche bar that looked yummy. then a homemade cheese section. then when you get to the far left side, it's basically a huge food court. some great looking stuff there. huge sheets of pork rind. a very cool agua fresca bar with horchata & all other kinds of fruit juices. the produce looked great as well. ended with a very interesting very sizeable mexican pastry section. very cool over all.

lux
to wrap up the day trip, we went & found lux coffee bar. it's basically across the street from central high. heard about it on the chowhound board. it turns out that pane bianco is right next door, though it was closed. very cool. the place itself was very, very cool. some great art on the walls. built kind of funky industrial. very, very non-chain independent cool. the one knock that i'd read is that some of the staff had attitude. it was 180 degrees from that. my main interaction was with a heavily tatooed, pierced fellow named sammy. he was very, very cool. talked to us a good deal. poured a mean, mean latte & mocha. did it with the cool pro-barrista milk design. the coffee was awesome too. best we've had in az. heather didn't feel hers was quite up to kean coffee (in ca - costa mesa) but close. the owners were out having a baby so sammy said their roasting has been thin lately & they were short on beans to sell. we will definitely be back to get some decaf beans. right before i left, stopped to talk to sammy - he was in the roasting room - and he gave us a free bag of coffee beans. how cool is that! was a great experience overall.

my nemisis the pool

basically i hate the pool. just throwing it out there so you know where i stand. i know my pop feels the same. i believe the pool has an evil soul and actively tries to dirty itself up. well winter, which i love for the lack of need for pool maintenance, is coming to an end & the evil pool is trying to turn green. of course last year it won & we had to replace our filter & pump. now it is time to enter the battle again.

sinus rinse

if you have allergies, you have to sinus rinse. i've shared this with some of my allergy disposed friends & gotten positive response. it does nothing to make your allergies go away but it so helps with the symptoms. basically it's a take-off on the whole aryuvedic neti pot but modernized which lets you add pressure to the mix (very good addition). you basically use saline to blow out your nasal passages. i just can't get over how much i love it every time i'm having trouble. morning & nighttime daily ritual. i even have heather partaking now (since she has a cold). if you have allergy problems, go to walgreen's now and get one. you will be happy you did.

my gym

my gym is so cool. i really think this type of thing is so important for kid's development. i think if you can help them develop coordination, then it will apply to everything they do in the future. heather & i decided to pull the trigger. thanks to jenny for turning us on to it. so cool. i really think the gymnastics my mom put us in when we were kids did tons for my coordination.

up at that area around bell & the 101 where my gym is, there are also tons of other cool stuff. dance studio (for marina & heather of course), martial arts, gymnastic classes, velocity sports performance (core, sports performance training like fluid sp), rock climbing gym, ice skating, jumpy place, marina's swim place. very cool.

i would love to get marina in gymnastics at some point too for more coordination stuff. eventually a running coach (as i think that also applies to everything).

rennaissance fair

re

feb/march dining

it was an unprecedented month of dining for us. of course we have heather's birthday, valentine's day & my birthday within the space of a month.

  • chaparral room - mom took us for a great dinner. as always the service is the highlight. they are just incredible there. also have frank sinatra jr. there crooning which my mom loves.
  • a different point of view - went here for heather's birthday with marina. the view was awesome. the food was good. our waiter was psycho though. i think he was afraid of marina. he was all hyped up (heh, heh, heh) with his nervous laugh like he'd taken too many hydroxycut. he also had weak recommendations. he thought the dish with savory ice creams was weird - which we liked best. the lobster bisque was awesome here.
  • roy's - jen & stu took us - very good as always. had some stellar appetizers. the fish was great. great night.
  • t cooks - heather & i went for valentine's day as we had a gift certificate - this was actually a great meal. we had an awesome server (carrie) who led us down the right track. we had dual foie gras appetizers with a pate appetizer; lobster bisque i think - need to find my list.
  • sea saw - jen & stu took us for bday's. drop you in your tracks awesome as always. the meal was absolutely phenomenal. it's just too dang expensive. were going to go there for my birthday too but just couldn't justify the expense. i wouldn't even say that it's not a good value. i think nobu-san's food is that good. i think he is right up there with some of the best chefs in the country / world. we just don't make enough money to be able to afford going full bore. i guess we could do standard omakase but i think nobu-san expects more of us.
  • binkley's - holy mackeral. heather & i went to binkley's for my birthday instead & it was incredible. was expecting a great meal but got a completely unexpected absolutely phenomenal one. one of the best meals of my life. i love binkley's.
  • noodles ranch - here for the birthday with the family. had a great time. food was good as always. owner was super cool & the service was great. the family liked it too! liked the food & also the decor/charm that is completely unexpected in what looks like a strip mall fast food restaurant.
  • melting pot - actually had a terrible meal here. brought jenny & austin here & were embarrased by the service. i love the melting pot & heather & i had more great date nights there than anywhere else. we also always buy gift certificates for it because it is so fun. our server was horrifying. he must have been high or something. he kept vanishing for 20 - 30 minutes at a time. it took us 4 hours to get through dinner (tough with marina). the other major bummer was that our oil burner (we had 2 to diversify) was turned up to nuke the world heat and it burned everything for the first 1/3 of the main course. then they turned it off & it was cold 2/3 of the way through. also had other random stuff like clearing 1/2 the plates & then leaving the rest for 20-30 minutes. waited for our wine for about 20 minutes. had to flag down another waiter to get a plate for marina & water. had to flag down antoher waiter to get another plate for marina later & a spoon. also forgot the butter for the lobster. also forgot to sub tuna (since heather is pregnant) for chicken or sirloin as we'd requested. when i pointed it out, he subbed it for shrimp (no good as we needed food for marina) and had to go back again. the very cool thing was that when i informed the gm about our experience & our disappointment, she ended up comping our meal & buying a round of drinks. ensured me there had been no change in ownership or management so we'll definitely be going back again. we'll just run if we see that waiter again. he brought back memories of the waiters going our back & smoking when we were young & working at the door.

guru barry

trying to figure out what i'm going to do to get in shape. past practice would be to hit the gym, lift weights (standard old fashioned way) & spend time on the treadmill.

because of my exposure to the new style stuff out there - core & all stability stuff - i don't know exactly what to do.

barry - guru. yoga. anatomy trains.

landrollers - very cool. taking after the not-so cool cesar milan.

picassa web albumns

if you want to post your digital pictures on the internet & you don't know how, you need picasa & web albums?

i used to upload photos to my website in galleries but i so have no time lately. it took too long and was too involved. i finally started using the web albums functionality of picasa. it takes absolutely no time & is just plain awesome. of course was turned on to this by stuie.

anyhow the first part of the equation is picasa. picasa is a free digital photo cataloging & editing program. have been using this for a very long time (again turned on to it by stuie). it is just plain awesome for basic management of photos. it's fast, supports RAW, powerful and it's free!!! it was free before, then google bought it & they continued to keep it free...and they update it regularly.
to get picasa, go here:
http://picasa.google.com/

now it's no photoshop and if you're going to go crazy nuts into editing your photos, that's the way to go. if you're not, you can do amazing editing in picasa and so so quickly. it is also non-destructive (applies layers to your photos so you can back out the changes). i think you can also commit the changes now but i've stayed away from that.

so once you get picasa going, you'll see there is a web albums button in it. to upload your photos to the web, all you do is highlight them, click the web albums button and there they go. you can rename the folder if you like and you can upload them in different resolutions.

there is a middle tier that goes along with this. to do the web album thing you also need a gmail account. when you get one of these (which gives you 2 GB of space), you can connect web albums to your gmail account.

to get a gmail account, go here: http://gmail.com

this gives you 1 GB of photo space, recently up from 200 MB. if you want more space, you can buy it for...
  • 6.25GB ($25 USD per year)
  • 25GB ($100 USD per year)
  • 100GB ($300 USD per year)
  • 250GB ($500 USD per year)
don't think we're going to need that! they'll probably have bumped this up 3 times by the time we get close.

once you start uploading, your photos are going to be at: http://picasaweb.google.com/youremailprefix

so far, stu, jenny, dad c, curtis & we are all on it.
also just started using the favorites functionality. if you mark other picasaweb sites as favorites, you can get updates when your favorites upload new photos (choose daily, weekly monthly or none). pretty cool.

sakana on power & baseline - rant

man that place is busy. somehow sakana gives the masses exactly what they want. decent japanese food. edible sushi. decent prices. and with all the growth out there it was packed. i just need to figure out how to do that in some fahion. then we'll be in the money & off the treadmill.

the thing i'm ranting about is that we waited for 48 minutes to get our table when we were told 15 - 20. we went with curtis, velma & nate so marina & nate were squirming in the waiting area for 48 mintues. they were very, very good mind you but come on people, take a look. probably the last 20 of those minutes were when there were 3 to 4 empty tables all together. i understand that places are busy but is it not painfully obvious when you see 2 2 year-olds running around madly, the earlier you can get them into a seat, the easier it is on everybody.

melting pot

went to the melting pot in scottsdale on thursday with jenny quincey & austin. typically we just love that place. we've always had good experiences and think enough of it to often buy gift certificates for people as presents.

we had a terrible experience the other night. the service was just awful. it seemed like our server was high! he would just vanish for extended periods of time. it ended up taking 4 hours (from 7 to 11) for us to finish our meal. marina was wiped.
