los

first visit to los. didn't know what to expect. heard it was the top thai restaurant in the us. man was i not let down.

the first thing was finding it. it's in a nasty dingy strip mall. nothing to look at. i found it, went in & there was a line of 8 to 10 people. told me that for 1, i was looking at a 2 hour wait. i decided to make a reservation for the following night & jetted off to try rosemary's (which was good but i would to to los over it any day).

so back the next day by myself. this in and of itself is a bummer - only for the reason that you cannot order more dishes and try more food.

this is what i had:

daily special - softshell crab salad - it was sweet, salty, spicy. man it was good. this is one of my favorite things i've ever eaten. it had pieces of deep fried softshell crab, bean sprouts, green apple, peanuts, cilantro, jullienne carrots, jullienne red bell peppers, cashews, some thai chilis and a dressing - maybe just lemon juice? oh so good.

then i had the entree daily special - prawns with garlic pepper salt. this was awesome but not a dish for 1 person. it was a huge dish of deep fried prawns that had been butterflied but the shells left attached. on one side, you'd have this beautiful deep fried shrimp meat and then on the other, the deep fried shrimp shell that was like a killer crispy crunch who knows what. it was just too much deep fried for 1 person though. i did finish the huge platter and enjoyed it but it was too much. i later tried the prawns ocha and this is the ticket as it has some salad a bit like the softshell crab salad that cuts the deep fry.

had 2 killer thai iced teas.

and then i finished with the best sticky rice and mango of my life. it made my next cyclo sticky rice & mango just feel feeble. has toasted mung bean on top which is a great touch. the rice is just perfect. i could eat vats of this. i later found out that you can also get it with coconut ice cream or when mango is not in season, that is the default. that is not to be passed. the coconut ice cream is incredible - perfect partner for the incredible sticky rice. very good mango is just very good mango to me. the other 2 were unbeatable.
