picassa web albumns

if you want to post your digital pictures on the internet & you don't know how, you need picasa & web albums?

i used to upload photos to my website in galleries but i so have no time lately. it took too long and was too involved. i finally started using the web albums functionality of picasa. it takes absolutely no time & is just plain awesome. of course was turned on to this by stuie.

anyhow the first part of the equation is picasa. picasa is a free digital photo cataloging & editing program. have been using this for a very long time (again turned on to it by stuie). it is just plain awesome for basic management of photos. it's fast, supports RAW, powerful and it's free!!! it was free before, then google bought it & they continued to keep it free...and they update it regularly.
to get picasa, go here:
http://picasa.google.com/

now it's no photoshop and if you're going to go crazy nuts into editing your photos, that's the way to go. if you're not, you can do amazing editing in picasa and so so quickly. it is also non-destructive (applies layers to your photos so you can back out the changes). i think you can also commit the changes now but i've stayed away from that.

so once you get picasa going, you'll see there is a web albums button in it. to upload your photos to the web, all you do is highlight them, click the web albums button and there they go. you can rename the folder if you like and you can upload them in different resolutions.

there is a middle tier that goes along with this. to do the web album thing you also need a gmail account. when you get one of these (which gives you 2 GB of space), you can connect web albums to your gmail account.

to get a gmail account, go here: http://gmail.com

this gives you 1 GB of photo space, recently up from 200 MB. if you want more space, you can buy it for...
  • 6.25GB ($25 USD per year)
  • 25GB ($100 USD per year)
  • 100GB ($300 USD per year)
  • 250GB ($500 USD per year)
don't think we're going to need that! they'll probably have bumped this up 3 times by the time we get close.

once you start uploading, your photos are going to be at: http://picasaweb.google.com/youremailprefix

so far, stu, jenny, dad c, curtis & we are all on it.
also just started using the favorites functionality. if you mark other picasaweb sites as favorites, you can get updates when your favorites upload new photos (choose daily, weekly monthly or none). pretty cool.
